I’ve had a rather light, non-injurious relationship with men, and even I’ve experienced many of the things mentioned in this thread. Creepy old men driving next to you on the street, cat-calling, asking if you “want a ride”. Saying nothing doesn’t help. Saying anything doesn’t help. Calling the cops serves no purpose. Having large weirdos leering at you that you’re aware are your neighbors makes you scared.
I once had a man knock on my door around midnight and tell me he could see me naked through my window. The office across the way from me was empty. My blinds were mostly pulled over. He did nothing (I assume he was just trying to be helpful in a weird way) but suddenly I had to keep the blinds closed always. And sit in the dark. Because you just didn’t know who might take you sitting alone in your own space as an invitation to invade.
The day someone nearly broke into my apartment by smashing the door frame while I was home (after several months of someone banging on my door for unknown reasons) I immediately fled to a friend’s place, abandoning my previous apartment and ended my lease. Not a few weeks later they managed to actually break in. The apartment was upended.
And nobody there seemed overly concerned with my situation.
You face a stark reality when you grow up as a woman. That no matter how strong you are, how small or how tall, people regard you as weaker. And that more often than not, you are physically weaker. And all it takes is one person to see you as nothing more than a sex object to be taken to completely upend your life. These aren’t experiences that most men face except perhaps in extremely radical circumstances (usually where there’s no women to take frustrations out on).
I’ve had about as male positive life growing up as a female can experience, and I’ve still faced these things. So if you’re a dude and you’re getting snippy next time a woman freezes up when you start complimenting her good looks, consider for a moment why she reacts that, and what other people did to get her there.
She’s not a bitch. She’s scared. She’s scared of you.

An update:
This week will be my last ‘hanging around’ in the day. Starting this next coming friday I will be busy at my father’s house saying goodbye before the big move to MD. From there it will be a hectic mess up to Anthrocon. BUT. in those days of hectic-ness, I shall need the RP to bring me the calms. <3 If you see me on, and nothing has happened, it does NOT mean that I am ignoring you! I am still getting used to this whole new skype layout. (have not updated for like… a year, and my contacts online are not constantly visible when I am chatting with someone else. bummer) Please!
